Cutting API-blocked idle time to zero

Vantage Labs' frontend team was blocked every sprint waiting on backend APIs. Mocking real endpoints with Ditto let both teams ship in parallel and pull two weeks off their release cycle.

The Slowdown

Vantage Labs' backend and frontend teams worked in lockstep — frontend couldn't build a screen until the backend endpoint it depended on was live. Every sprint lost 10-15 hours per engineer to blocked work and last-minute API renegotiation, and the problem compounded as the team grew from 6 to 14 engineers over a year.

Why Mocking, Not Just 'Move Faster'

The team had already tried the usual fixes — tighter sprint planning, an API-first design doc, a Slack channel for urgent unblocks. None of it addressed the root issue: frontend work was structurally dependent on backend being finished first, and no amount of process discipline changes that dependency.

The Fix

They stood up Ditto to mock every planned endpoint from the API spec before a single line of backend code existed, letting the frontend team build and test against realistic, versioned mock responses — including error states and edge cases the real API hadn't even been built to handle yet.

The Numbers

Frontend and backend now ship in parallel instead of in sequence. Release cycles dropped from 6 weeks to 4, and the team recovered roughly 12 engineer-hours per sprint that used to go to waiting — time that now goes into the backlog instead.
